988 Day – September 8: You Can Save a Life. Share 988.

September 8 is 988 Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and making sure people throughout our communities know that help is available when they need it.

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is a national three-digit number connecting individuals experiencing mental health-related distress with suicide prevention and crisis resources. In Georgia, 988 calls, texts, and chats are answered through the Georgia Crisis and Access Line (GCAL), 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Sometimes making a difference starts with something as simple as sharing three numbers: 9-8-8.

A person does not have to wait until a situation becomes unbearable to reach out for help. Whether someone is experiencing emotional distress, struggling with a mental health or substance use concern, having thoughts of suicide, or is concerned about someone they love, 988 can help connect them with compassionate crisis support.

On September 8, we encourage everyone to help spread the word:

• Call 988 when you need crisis support.
• Text 988 when talking on the phone isn’t comfortable or possible.
• Share 988 with your friends, family, coworkers, and community.
• Save 988 in your phone so you know where to turn when you or someone else needs help.

You don’t have to be a mental health professional to make a difference in someone’s life. Sometimes being willing to listen, reminding someone that they matter, and helping connect them with support can be incredibly powerful.

988 or 911?

988 is designed to connect people with mental health, suicide prevention, and crisis resources. 911 remains the appropriate number when there is an immediate threat to life, a medical emergency, fire, or another situation requiring an emergency public-safety response.
